Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) is an advanced course designed for the registered nurse interested in increasing his/her knowledge in management of the multiple trauma patient. The ATCN course is taught concurrently with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). The ATCN program has been operational for more than 25 years and has an excellent record of offering a superb trauma educational program, and maintaining a positive collaboration with the ACS Committee on Trauma State Chapters.
The ATCN course consists of lectures, skill stations, and practical testing stations that cover various aspects of trauma care, such as initial assessment and management, airway and ventilatory management, pediatric trauma, hemorrhagic shock, musculoskeletal and spinal trauma, and head trauma. The skill stations are based on an interactive "hands-on: scenario-based approach" to adult education. The practical testing stations allow the ATCN students to demonstrate the application of ATLS and ATCN information on a moulaged patient.

The ATCN course is available in different formats, such as student course, faculty course, student update course, and hybrid course. The student course is for nurses who have not taken the ATCN course before or whose certification has expired. The faculty course is for nurses who have successfully completed the student course and wish to become ATCN instructors. The student update course is for nurses who have a current ATCN certification and want to renew it. The hybrid course is a combination of online learning and in-person skill stations.
The ATCN course is currently being offered in numerous states as well as internationally. The ATCN Committee is continually responding to requests from other regions, states, and countries to start this program in their areas. There is a 6-month planning process for all inaugural courses. To find out more about the ATCN course, visit the [ATCN website] or contact your [ATCN Regional Director].
